Professional Engineers Society Raritan Chapter
Vision & Roadmap For NJSPE
The New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers will be an association dedicated to Professional Engineers who live and/or work in New Jersey or those engineering graduates on the licensure path. To ensure a growing membership of these professionals, there will be emphasis on activities that attract more students to pursue engineering careers and a PE license. To better serve this membership, a reinvigorated Value Package will be developed that will emphasize educational opportunities, safe guarding the value of the PE license and other appropriate services.
The existing geographically based chapter structure will evolve to an Interest Group structure. These may be proposed by members- based on NJSPE criteria – who are passionate about a common topic. This common interest may pertain to an engineering practice area, geographical concentration, demographic commonality, or other appropriate similarity. Although the Interest Groups will not necessarily be geographically based, nothing precludes members in a particular geographic locale from forming an Interest group. An existing, viable chapter may be re-chartered following Interest Group chartering procedures. Information about forming and/or joining one or more Interest Group will be provided by NJSPE. A corridor of time would allow current chapters or new member groups to apply to create Interest Groups prior to dissolution of existing chapters. These Interest Groups will also be a means for attracting existing members and non-member PEs to participate and – in the latter category - to join NJSPE.
If a member indicates “No Interest Group” affiliation on a new membership application or on a dues renewal document, the member will be considered to be a member of only the state society and NSPE. Nothing shall preclude an NJSPE member from being a member of more than one Interest Group. Members may join interest groups at any time.
State-level committees will be created - or re-invigorated - to fulfill this vision, such as ‘Student Program’ and ‘Education’ Committees. Member-volunteers for these and other critical committees will be recruited from the NJSPE membership. Interest Groups will be expected to support the critical committees. Further, an Interest Group may evolve to assume the workings of some non-critical committees, in effect, making the committee an Interest Group.
Communications with members will be coordinated by the state society and – when such become functional – Interest Groups, as each deems appropriate.
Financial support for both committees and Interest Groups will be available through a streamlined dues structure whereby each NJSPE member would pay the same amount. The Executive Committee would review and approve charters and budgets for Interest Groups, distribute funds, and monitor performance.
Major items to be finalized include criteria by which an Interest Group is chartered, disposition of current chapter assets, designation of critical state-level committees, revision of NJSPE governance structure based on Interest Groups, and time frames for each major step.
Approved in concept by the NJSPE Board of Trustees at its meeting on September 27, 2006.
